Enemy Elite Friday: Gustav Alvermann (Germany)

"Gustav Alvermann was a German infantry companie commander during the campaign in the West in 1940.  His regiment was selected as part of a force to be airlifted to the Dutch airfield at Valkenburg, from there they were to advance to the Hague.  However the Ju-52 transport aircraft got stuck in the mud midway through the mission, and so only part of the German force reached the airfield.  Alvermann’s 10th company would become the backbone of the German troops holding the airfield during 5 days of defensive combat against counterattacking forces.  For his successful role in the battle for the airfield, Alvermann was awarded the Knight’s Cross."  from his Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross citation, awarded on May 26th, 1940 as Hauptmann of the Infantry Regiment 47 of the 22th Infantry Division.

Another honored enemy,
