Retschiza. On this day, following a four-hour artillery barrage, the
Soviets launched a major attack against the sector of the
I./Pz.Gren.Rgt. 13 at around 08:00. At this time Lieutenant Abraham and
his 40 men were defending on the battalion’s right flank, and here they
held off attack after attack for three-and-a-half hours despite having
all rearward connections cut off by broken-in Soviet forces. Abraham
only break out to the rear at around midday while also taking along all
his wounded soldiers. After this he went over to a counterattack with a
reserve company that had arrived in the meantime. This counterattack
would result in success, however Abraham himself would be fatally shot
during the conclusion of this engagement." from his Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross on January 20th, 1944 as Leutnant of the Panzer Grenadier Regiment 13 of the 5th Panzer Division.
