"Awarded for his actions during the Polish campaign of 1939.  He particularly distinguished himself on the night of the 18/19.09.1939, where he found himself surrounded by a superior Polish force near Tuchowice with an Abteilung of his Division.  He not only broke through the Polish encirclement ring (thereby linking up with the remainder of the Division) but also managed to take 2 Polish generals and 10000 men prisoner in the process."  from his Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross citation, awarded on 27 October 1939.
 
"Awarded for his leadership of the Panzergruppe 3 during Operation Barbarossa and in the winter of 1941/42, where he mastered a number of critical situations."  from his Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves citation, awarded on 17 February 1942.
 
"Awarded as commander of the 3. Panzer-Armee for his achievements while commanding this formation during the successful defensive battles north of Smolensk in the winter of 1943/44."  from his Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords citation, awarded on 26 May 1944.
