"Awarded for his achievements in strangling allied supply traffic to Malta through 1941/42, in cooperation with Italian air forces.  Through this he greatly improved the security of the German supply convoys to North Africa.  He also was recognized for the support that Luftwaffe aircraft and Flak units provided to Rommel’s forces."  from his Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords citation, awarded on July 18, 1942.
