"Awarded for his contributions to the success of U-48 as its Torpedo Weapons Officer during the early war period.  Serving under U-Boat commanders Herbert Schultze and Heinrich Bleichrodt participated in the sinking of 200,000 GRT of shipping." from his Knight Cross of the Iron Cross citation, awarded on November 3, 1940.
 
"Awarded following three successful cruises during which he sunk 10 ships with 28324 GRT (including the British corvette "Zinnia" on the 23.08.1941) and damaged a further 2 with 11596 GRT." from his Knight Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves citation, awarded on December 31, 1941.
 
"Awarded following a further three very successful cruises, during which 10 ships with 67981 GRT were sunk and 3 ships with 19440 GRT were damaged by Suhren and his U-Boat." Knight Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords citation, awarded on September 1, 1942.
