Honored Allies Wednesday: Boris Safonov (USSR)

"On 30 May, he took off for his 224th combat mission, flying a Curtiss P-40 to cover the approach of arctic convoy PQ-16. He shot down two Ju-88s but crashed into the sea following engine failure. The convoy escorts were unable to find him. Safonov's flying log shows his tally as 20 individual kills and 6 shared, although he is believed to have actually scored 25 individual and 14 shared. He was awarded the Order of Lenin on September 16, 1941 and the Hero of the Soviet Union twice on September 16, 1941 and May 27, 1942."
