On June 9th, 1944, Oberleutnant Augenstein of the Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross after 42 night victories. He was also awarded the German Cross in Gold as Leutnantof of the same unit on January 16th, 1944.
