By doing so he was able to hold off the Soviet forces that were attacking to the south and thereby enable the withdrawal of German forces from Novgorod." from his Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross citation, awarded on February 8th, 1944 as Oberst of Grenadier Regiment 102 in the 24th Infantry Division.
